In Februari 2022, Dennie Boxem made a compilation of several artworks of M.C. Escher; the famous Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired woodcuts and lithographs. The enormous painting would have been Netherlands largest tribute to Eschers work; in 2022 they honoured the 50th anniversary of his death (March 27th, 1972). The commissioning date of Boxems tribute would correspond with the day.
The Team-Artwork would have been a commission for Beijers Naudé. The Gymnasium in Leeuwarden, Escher’s city of birth, was celebrating their 100 year anniversary. For the occasion they wanted a Team-Artwork to unite all their students, teachers and other personnel in an artwork together. The 50th anniversary of their world famous fellow townsman’s death felt like a unique opportunity to celebrate their 100th anniversary; honour Escher, and educate the students on his amazing art at the same time.
Unfortunately Boxem was forced to ahold working on the art project on behold of the Escher Compagny. Copyrights had been violated.
Boxem was convinced that this did not apply, since this was an educational art project, and 560 individual contributions would decorate and cover up Boxems compilation of Eschers work. This would leave no chance of the end result looking like a replica.
Unfortunately the Escher Compagny and Boxem could not find a compromise and the Team-Artwork had to be destroyed.
