The Polar Bear Makersfabriek. 2025

This Polar Bear mosaic sculpture by Dennie Boxem welcomes visitors of the event hall at The Makersfabriek in Zwolle.

The Makersfabriek actually has their own stuffed polar bear. It stands at their department BREINN to make a statement: “if the habitat of such a majestic creature can disappear, so can ours.” Next to the bear is a table in the shape of The Netherlands, with the actual heights of our landscape. The sea is actual water and has an icecap that can ‘melt’, and flood the land, to visualise our risks. Meanwhile BREINN is working on the first floating apartment complex of The Netherlands. This is why Dennie’s first mosaic sculpture depicts a polar bear.

The artwork is almost fully made out of circular material use.

All rejected or broken – but still beautiful – tiles are from partner Dijkstra Friese Kleiwaren from Sneek.
